Audrey Kawasaki is a painter who is born and raised LA, I have been a massive fan of her for many years since discovering her whilst at University and love nothing more than checking in on her site every couple of months to see what new work has been added. To quote her site directly her work are contradictions within themselves “…..innocent yet, erotic, attractive yet disturbing” and there isn’t really a more accurate description of Kawaskai’s work. She seamlessly blends erotica, manga comics and Art Nouveau to create a genre all of her own. Most of her work is painted directly onto wood panelling with oil paints which gives it a unique edge allowing the texture of the paint to work with the grain of the wood.
She shows that sometimes formal education isn’t the best thing for all artists, having studied at the Pratt Institue in New York for 2 years she left feeling that New York’s art scene didn’t fit with the style of work she wanted to be creating.
Below is just a small selection of some of Kawasaki’s work, to view her online portfolio click here. Her portfolio also contains a collection of her doodles and an online shop so you can pick up your very own Audrey Kawasaki.
